Hi Friends, thanks for clicking..
Last summer I noticed changes to my vision out of the blue. I was subsequently diagnosed with a rare, progressive and potentially blinding eye condition called Birdshot Chorioretinopathy. I am on a medication plan to stabilise the condition.
Unfortunately there is little commercial interest in funding research into better treatment as the disease is so rare. There is currently no known cure and treatment to control it involves a daily cocktail of immune suppressants and other harsh drugs which cause their own problems. The Birdshot Uveitis Society charity is run by volunteers and provides support and information for those of us who have it and raises money for new research.
Another (much better) thing that happened in 2017 was that I signed up for a charity cycle on a whim, bought a road bike, joined a cycle club and became hooked! In 2018 I have decided to use the good to improve the bad by asking people to sponsor me to cycle 2018 miles in 2018 by making a donation to The Birdshot Uveitis Society Charity.
I use Strava and Garmin to measure my mileage and am also aiming to climb 90,000 ft over the year. I will be participating in a number of Sportives, including the Humber Bridge Sportive, Yorkshire Lass Sportive, Wharfedale Ton, and Tour of the Borders. I will be getting out on the bike as often as I can at weekends to make up the rest of the miles. Cake will feature highly in my nutrition plans- I am not a natural athlete!
