Peddling for mental health in Goa · 5 February 2020
This time I've chosen noisy, vibrant and beautiful India as the place for my next charity cycle adventure and in February 2020, I'll be riding between Mumbai and Goa over 5 simmering days to raise as much money as I can for The Lucy Rayner Foundation.
Lucy's family set up this fabulous charity in 2012 after she took her own life at the age of just 22. The work they do helps provide invaluable mental health services in the community for young people with mental health challenges. Recognising the signs and symptoms of depression early enough is crucial for helping vulnerable young people in need of support, particularly as many services are woefully inadequate and significantly underfunded.
The Lucy Rayner Foundation was supported by Jude's school, Trinity, last year and I came to know of the fantastic work Stuart and Jenny Rayner are doing in raising awareness and to support families who go through the heartbreaking and life-changing experience of losing a loved one to suicide. In addition, a very close friend recently lost her brother this way and it now feels even more urgent. When I decided to take up this cycle challenge, I knew immediately that it was this charity I wanted to support.
The LRF has produced a film, 'Lucy - Breaking the Silence', which is about her life and the ground-breaking work the charity has done since her death. It's a moving tribute to her and a call to action. It can be viewed here:
