Story
Group B Streptococcus is the UK's most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies and of meningitis in babies under age 3 months. On average in the UK, at least-two babies a day develop a group B Strep infection -one baby a week dies from their GBS infection, and-one baby a week survives with long-term disabilities – physical, mental or both.Yet most group B Strep infections are preventable. Group B Strep Support informs families & health professionals about group B Strep to save tiny lives.
At 36 weeks pregnant with Fern I was diagnosed as a carrier of Group B Strep following a swab test which was done to check for something else. Having never heard of this before and reading up on GBS I was absolutely petrified about what this could mean for Fern. I trawled google and read lots of horror stories but found the GBSS website which had lots of helpful information, advice and support. Knowing the risks involved meant that I was offered antibiotics via drip throughout labour, Fern would be kept under additional monitoring for at least 24 hours after her birth and I knew all the signs and symptoms to look out for when we were back at home. We could've had a significantly different outcome had I not been aware of any of this!
I'm fundraising to raise awareness of GBS and help to put an end to such a preventable infection and help save tiny lives ❤️
