Story

Hi Everyone, my name is Louise and I am running the Dublin Marathon on the 29th of October for the Irish Cancer Society. This will be my first ever marathon and I would like to dedicate it to one of my best friends, Sarah Maguire, who sadly passed away in 2020 after an ongoing battle with cancer.

The route of the Marathon goes through many parts of Dublin that Sarah & I made memories in while growing up. Sunny days spent in the Phoenix park, St Patrick’s Day at St Stephens Green, trekking out to Bushy Park and all of the other memories I could talk about all day. Getting to run through these parts of Dublin will bring these cherished memories to life and give me the perseverance to complete the 26.2 miles.

Running this marathon is my attempt at standing up to cancer and to try live by the strength, determination and positivity that Sarah always portrayed in life. I know Sarah will be with me every step of the way and I hope I can make her proud.

1 in 2 of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime. Cancer is the most common cause of death in Ireland with more than 9,000 people in Ireland dying each year. That's almost 25 people dying from cancer every day across Ireland. An average of 1 person every hour. The Irish Cancer Society are working towards a future where nobody dies from cancer, and everyone affected by the disease will have access to world class treatment and support.
