London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·
As many people will know, I ran the 2022 London Marathon to raise money for another fantastic charity, the British Heart Foundation. Well I say I ran it - unfortunately I only made it 22 miles as at that point I collapsed with heatstroke.
I don't really remember everything that happened, all I remember is being stirred by a couple of volunteers from St John Ambulance who hauled me onto a trolly and swiftly rushed me across the stream of oncoming runners and over to the first aid tent. A team of St John doctors, nurses and first aiders then looked after for me for nearly 3 hours, working to get my body temperature down, before more St John folk arrived to take me to hospital to get checked out.
I'd always been aware of St John Ambulance and seen them at various events but in all honesty, never truly realised how important they are. Their swift action and excellent care potentially saved my life at the London Marathon. What better way to say thank you than to have another shot at the marathon and raise money to support their fantastic work?!
I am very much hoping LM23 goes better than LM22 and that I won't need the help of the St John volunteers, but knowing they are on hand if I need them made me feel confident enough to even contemplate trying it again.
Thank you for supporting such a great cause and funding more life saving training and support ❤️
