LSESU Musicians' Stream · 18 December 2020

Nordoff and Robbins is the UK’s largest music therapy charity, with a unique approach shaped by more than 60 years of practice. Through the power of music, it breaks through the barriers caused by life-limiting illness, disability and social isolation. The charity does this through providing music therapy to people across the UK, whilst also training the music therapists of the future and funding research to measure and improve the impact of its work.

Story

Hi! We are the LSESU Music Society, one of the largest societies at the LSE, with an annual membership of more than 400. As musicians, we recognise the incredible power that music can bring to people as well as the importance to help people in need and make contributions to society. We are holding a virtual fundraising concert for Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Charitythe largest music therapy charity in the UK that use music to enrich the lives of people with life-limiting illness, disabilities or isolation. With nearly 20 individual acts spanning pop, classical and film/video game music, the concert will go live on YouTube at 7:00PM GMT on 21 Feb. If you find the performances enjoyable, we will be absolutely thankful if you contribute even a small share to help.

More about Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Charity:

In 1959 American composer and pianist Paul Nordoff and special education teacher Clive Robbins developed a new form of collaborative music-making to engage vulnerable and isolated children, which they termed 'therapy in music'. Since then, Nordoff Robbins has been dedicated to investigating the impact that music therapy can have for those affected by life-limiting illness, isolation, or disability, and this work ensures that our practice is effective and led by our beneficiaries’ lived experiences.

Just a little more about us:

Winning the Gold STARS award for 8 years in a row, we are one of the most active societies on the LSE campus. Catering for a range of tastes from rock to baroque, the Music Society has arranges jazz evenings, trips to concerts, open-mic nights, and even boat trips - these are just some exciting and well-received events we've held in the past. Despite the pandemic, we still pride ourselves on having a great presence among current students as well as alumni and school staff, with virtual choir rehearsals, speaker panels, online quizzes and socials, embracing a greater diversity than any other society on campus.
