Lucie's Wheels For The World Kenya Trip 2018

Eastleigh 10K · 17 June 2018
In September 2018, I am travelling to Kenya to take part in a ‘Wheels for the World’ wheelchair distribution programme with ‘Through the Roof’. The charity restores and distributes wheelchairs to disabled people in developing countries whose poverty would otherwise leave them immobile.
As a Physiotherapist, I will be joining a team of clinicians, engineers and support volunteers. The charity works both in the UK and abroad, collecting old NHS wheelchairs and sending them to a workshop in a partner prison for refurbishing. Distribution will take place over 10 days in which all chairs will be appropriately fitted to ensure safety and comfort.
All recipients and family members will be instructed in the correct use and maintenance of their chair so that sustainable impact can continue once the team’s visit has ended.
Many of you will know that I can’t shake my obsession with Africa. My day job here in the UK, with people who have complex brain injury, enables me to help those who are less able to access some form of mobility opportunity. I love my job but it shouldn’t end here in the UK! I am passionate about enabling access to mobility for all, regardless of impairment level, financial resources or the country in which they live.
This charity does just that, and what’s more, it works in Africa, a place close to my heart, creating a stable, sustainable partnership with a local community, using an inclusion focus based in Christian teaching.
Please support me running my first ever 10K in whatever way you would like, and consider donating financially to help me raise flight and trip costs for this very worthwhile cause.
