Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As some of you may or may not be aware, my wee mum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer November 2014. I thought my heart was broken then but it has continuely been ripped to shreds since and what makes it worse is the knowing that there is more to come. I won't go into to much detail as mum is a private person but feel I must state a few facts about ovarian cancer.
Ovarian cancer is called 'the silent killer' for a reason. It is aggressive and is mostly only detected at an advanced stage when it has already spread, therefore the survival rate is very low. Most woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer have a life expectancy of 5 years and this is when detected in the earlier stages, which is sadly not normally the case for the majority.
Statistics show that in the month of march alone over 580 woman in the UK will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 350 will die from the disease. These statistics also show that every year 7000 woman in the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 4,300 lose their lives.
It is believed that lack of awareness and methods of early detection of ovarian cancer are big contributors to this low survival rate, as most women don't realise what they should be looking for. Although the symptoms are very common if woman were aware of what they are, they might seek a doctors opinion earlier and there is a blood test available. Early detection can mean the difference between life and death.
The reason I have chosen to raise funds for the Angels of Hope is because they depend solely on the money they receive from events and the general public to try and spread awareness of ovarian cancer and to fund research for early detection methods and better treatments in Northern Ireland. They are a smaller charity that cannot advertise as much and simply don't receive the same support as most of the larger cancer charities.
Obviously many men and women going through cancer treatment lose their hair but even though it is no consolation, they are provided with excellent wigs to help them cope with this change. Many places take hair donations to help make these wigs so I chose to donate some of mine to the 'little princess trust' and use this as an opportunity to raise some money for this other wonderful charity in the process.
If you have been kind enough to take the time to read this and make a donation, I am very grateful. Thank you!
P.s I am also part of another just giving page, in which a group of us girls 'Sweatybettys321' are doing a 5k muddy run/obstacle course to raise money for cancer research. If you would prefer to donate there and support all other forms of cancer also feel free just message me and I will give you the details. All money going to great causes :)
