My name is Lucky Sherpa and I am an Early Years
Practitioner. I am currently working in a local school with children aged
3-6yrs old. I am preparing for a voluntary trip to Fiji, in collaboration with
a charity called “Think Pacific” to help support young children and their families living in hardship.

Many people are not aware that over 1/3 of children in rural
Fiji live below the poverty line. In these areas there are limited access to
education, youth and sports activities and schools are devoid of basic
resources.  A cyclone, which took place in Fiji in Feb 2016 left over 200 schools damaged or destroyed entirely and without any teaching resources. Families in remote villages struggle to meet their daily needs and less than 50% of people have access to proper sanitation and freshwater. Children face some of the biggest barriers.

I have a huge desire to assist and feel I can make a difference on this project both by volunteering and using my summer to teach and deliver my skills, knowledge and experience to change the lives of these children. Specifically, I will be offering vital classroom support, organising one-to-one tuition and supporting early years education for children aged 3-6yrs old. I will be able to teach children to read, build their confidence, become a role model and support grass roots kindergarten.

The project may also involve helping build new schools/nursery in partnership with the Fijian ministry.

To enable me to take part in this project, I need to raise £1300, which will go directly to the Think Pacific’s foundation. The money I raise will be used to provide long term support to children from purchasing books, stationery and school resources to sports equipment.

PLEASE NOTE: I will be funding all of my own flights, insurance, injections and travel myself to get to Fiji.

Your kind support will help me achieve my target to volunteer with the charity and take part in training so we can deliver project aims really effectively.

This is my first step towards international volunteering and
my aim for the future is to use the experiences and ideas I gain from this
venture to take part in similar projects around the world such as Nepal,
Africa, etc.
