The Karen Woo Foundation provides grants to provide healthcare to Afghans, in particular women and children, to train healthcare providers (eg doctors and midwives), to provide medical supplies to healthcare providers particularly in rural areas and to provide healthcare education to Afghan women.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Myself and Roz will cycle from France along the Belgium coast line ending in the Netherlands in 1 day. Yes it might be a fairly flat part of the world, but a massive personal challenge none the less, due to my loathing of being on a bike, and still with only 24 days to go having not been on a bike for a very long time!

I am doing this to support the work of The Karen Woo Foundation, set up after Karen, a dear childhood friend was tragically shot dead whilst delivering aid to a remote region of Afghanistan. This was something that she felt a great passion for and to embark on this journey showed her immense courage.

Afghanistan is a complex and sometimes dangerous environment. This is a country where people delay seeking care, delay getting to a place where they can receive care and, once there, often, there is a delay in receiving care. Beyond that, at an even more basic level, there is a lack of health education, extreme malnutrition and limited vaccination programs. The harsh conditions exacerbate the problems for those with medical conditions - 1 in every 2 people who lose their sight die within 2 years; 1 in 5 children die before the age of 1; in rural areas, 1 in 6 die during childbirth.

£15 buys a resuscitation set for newly borns with breathing difficulties.

£25 buys a 7-day course of Co-Amoxiclav, a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

£50 buys enough analgesia, anti-diarrhea medication, and rehydration solutions for 1 person for a month.

£60 buys a "Neo-Natalie" training set for basic midwife tuition.

£200 pays for a rural midwife to receive training at a recognized centre for a month.

Please help me to keep Karen's legacy alive and to support the Foundation in raising funds for the projects that were so close to her heart.
