Maggie’s Centres are warm and welcoming places built alongside NHS hospitals that provide the support that people with cancer and their family and friends need. www.maggiescentres.org

Story

Recently someone I know was diagnosed with lung cancer. It has been a tough time for them and their entire family but the Maggie’s centre has been an incredible support to them and members of the family. The Maggie’s centre is an incredible place where people affected by cancer can go for different kinds of support. The practical support helps people cope with hair loss, benefit entitlements and teaches about eating well. The emotional support allows people affected by cancer or their loved ones to talk to a psychologist, and explore creative ways to manage stress. The social support allows people who are going through similar things to talk to each other and support each other. Each centre has a set of professionals who can help people affected in many different ways.

The Maggie’s centres across the country can only be kept open with donations and fundraising. I am going to be cutting my hair off to raise money for this incredible foundation and all the proceeds will go to the Maggie’s centre. Nelson Brown in Dumfries will be doing the cut towards the end of May, the date is yet to be confirmed. The hair that has been cut will be donated to the Little Princess Trust who make real hair wigs for children suffering with hair loss.

Any donation you can make will be greatly appreciated by all the people who use the centre and benefit from its support. I aim to raise £300 which pays for a Cancer Support Specialist to provide immediate advice and support for the one hundred visits welcomed at a Centre each day.
