Virtual Royal Parks Half Marathon 2021 · 11 April 2021 ·

TUSP works in Primary Schools in rural Uganda to ensure every child has access to a quality foundational education. In partnership with local communities, we develop school infrastructure and in-classroom programmes to ensure every child is given the platform to develop into their full potential.

Story

On 11th of April, I'll be attempting a half marathon for the first time... eek!

I'll be fundraising for The Uganda School Project - a small charity doing important work towards improving primary education in rural Uganda. It was set up in 2016 by a course mate of mine at IDS and his friend to support struggling government schools in remote Uganda where the majority of children do not complete primary education. Money raised will go towards a great cause - classroom building, teacher training, and other community development work.

This is a big undertaking (both the run and the school)! Please feel free to read more about the charity’s activities in the link below, and to make a donation– it would be really appreciated and will really make a massive difference!

Although the Ugandan government has an initiative to provide public education for all (under the ‘Universal Primary Education’ programme), a severe lack of resources, accountability and support means the educational system is highly ineffective. UNESCO has estimated that 68% of children in Uganda who enrol in primary school are likely to drop out before finishing the prescribed seven years. The statistics are worse for girls and for children with any sort of disability.

So far TUSP has worked at at Bumakenya Primary School in Namisindwa, Eastern Uganda, developing projects concerning building classrooms, pit latrines and tankwaters, setting up free lunch programmes and children safeguarding workshops, and micro-financing programmes for women in the local community. This has all been achieved through donations and volunteer work.
