Story

Our Story.....

Sarah, Andy(The Major) and myself (Lucy)have joined forces and will be running the Great North Run, 13.22 miles of Newcastles finest suburbs, ring roads and then out to the beaches of South  Shields. This year we will be running in support of Leeds Liver Unit, to raise money for an 'organ perfusor' machine.

The Leeds Liver Unit is one of the largest liver transplant centres in the UK facilitating transplants for both adults and children.  Our unit serves a vast area including all of Yorkshire and Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cumbria and parts of Lincolnshire, Notts, Derbyshire and Cheshire, so it may well be that we will be supporting someone you know and love.  We are helping to raise  £200.000 to develop an 'organ recovery centre'.

Every year many livers offered for transplantation are deemed not usable for many different reasons. The teams vision is to develop a centre that increases the use of these organs donated for transplantation, using new technology.  This campaign will raise money to fund the technology, research and staff education required for the project.

Every year around 10% of patients on the waiting list for a liver transplant either die or deteriorate and are removed from the list before they get a liver.  The machine will allow patients to access organs that are normally not used for them.

The organ perfusor machine;  allows resuscitation of the donated liver and maintains its condition; it allows us to assess the function and the viability of the organ and reduce the risk of failure and non function, and it will allow extended preservation of the organ to ensure that the best outcome can be obtained.

Liver transplants really do save lives save lives!
