The Children's Cancer Unit Charity supports the work of the medical team and staff at the Children’s Cancer Unit at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. We are a registered charity and depend on donations and fundraising by the general public.

Story

Hi everyone,
We are a group of friends whose lives have been touched by childhood cancer this year. Lucy (aged 8) is a little girl who is very dear to us all and was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma (ALL) early this year and so she has needed the support of this charity .

Throughout the last 6 months Lucy has benefited in many ways from the work of the Children’s Cancer Unit charity (CCU). Her initial experience with the charity came as soon as she was diagnosed when she and her parents spent their first few weeks in an isolation room that had been built by the CCU charity. Ongoing research and training provided by CCU into children's cancer, enables Lucy to have the best treatment available. From enjoying the weekly pizza night treat in hospital to receiving toys and gifts to make a dark day brighter, every effort made by this charity is appreciated by Lucy and her family.
In July alongside the medical staff and her play therapist, CCU charity organised an exclusive trip for Lucy and her family to the cinema to see ‘Peter Rabbit’ . This is something so normal that we all take for granted but something Lucy and her family couldn’t do as she is unable to mix with others. It was a very special day for the family, one made possible by the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity.

Lucy is a  girl who has always loved school and has really missed it. The CCU charity were able to provide her with an educational robot device  that she can use to join in with live lessons with her own class and teacher. This is a very expensive piece of equipment but one that has had huge benefits for Lucy as she has been able to remain an active participant in her own class whether she is at home or in hospital.

If there is anything that can be done to help a child on this journey it will be done by CCU charity along with other charities and the entire staff in the unit.

Lucy is an extremely brave and strong girl who is doing well with her treatment and constantly amazes all around her. She has always had an interest in all things medical and now wants to pursue a career in medical research.

As Lucy’s family friends this is a small part that we would like to play in our support of Lucy and her family and for so many others in similar situations. Lucy’s Mum is also part of this team which makes it even more special that she is able to join with us on this effort.
We are planning to run/walk/swim/cycle 1000km between us during September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Hopefully our children will also be able to join in with some of the kilometres to help us out and to help their friend.

Thanks for your support.
