Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

On 19th July, 2011 my daughter, Eve Lily was born.  The hospital did their best to treat what they thought was a challenging case of Jaundice.  Eve spent more of her first 3 weeks under UV lights than not.  This unfortunately did not clear her Jaundice levels.  Many blood tests did little more than confuse matters and the doctors did their best to battle the Jaundice with dietry changes.

The Hospital had little options left other than to refer Eve to Kings College Hospital in London.  In October, 2011, after 2 appointments consisting of ultra sounds and distressing blood tests, a liver biopsy was carried out.  The biopsy determined Eve to be a victim of a rare Liver Disease named Bilary Atresia.  In Lehmens terms, Bilary Atresia is a condition where Ducts that should carry Bile from the liver to the rest of the digestive system doesn't actually exist.  Therefore rendering Eve's Liver useless.  The operation (called a Kasai - named after the person who created the proecdure) was to fashion a duct from intestine tissue so that Bile could travel to the digestive system and let Eve digest food and drink as a normal baby should.  The operation lasted more than 6 hours and was single handedly the most scared we've ever been.

Thankfully, so far, Eve has responded brilliantly to the procedure and is eating all sorts of solid foods.  Her development is slower than other babies but Sarah and I are just thankful to have Eve a part of our lives and be in such high spirits.  She's a very happy baby.

The long and short of why I am running the London Marathon on behalf of the Children's Liver Disease Foundation is that I wish to help raise awareness for the various Liver Diseases out there.  The earlier Liver Diseases are diagnosed the higher chance of success it is for the child.

Eve, one day may need a Liver transplant.  I am hoping to be the first port of call for if ever this has to happen.  Running to keep fit is a commitment I make to Eve and my family that I will do my upmost to ensure I provide.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and any/all donations would be very gratefully recieved.

Thank you.

Luke
