Comic Relief · 12 March 2013

Since its launch in 1988, Red Nose Day has become a British institution. It’s a time when people across the country get together and fundraise at home, school and work to support people living incredibly tough lives, and has raised over £1.3 billion to date.

Story

Dr, Kar is having his face painted for the afternoon  , Dr . Kalil will beinghaving his head / beard shaved when he is back from leave and all members of staff that donate are wearing something red to work for the day!

In the UK, you help give shelter to young people living on the streets and protection to those living with domestic abuse. In Africa, your money saves thousands from malaria and provides whole communities with fresh water and life-saving vaccines.UKAfrica

just £2 can make such a different to peoples lives.

We work to support the needs of young people facing and experiencing mental health problems.

Why do we fund this programme?

Because...

  • Over the last 25 years, rates of anxiety and depression amongst young people have increased by 70%.
  • Research suggests that between 1 in 12 and 1 in 15 young people self-harm.
  • With the right help, young people with mental health problems can recover; but without support, stigma and ill health can lead to isolation, strong feelings of shame and a sense of hopelessness. This increases the chances of self-harm and suicide in young people.

What are we doing and how?

  • We fund work that gives young people living with mental health problems the chance to access services tailored to their needs.
  • We fund organisations who seek to ensure that those working with young people with mental health problems have the necessary skills and understanding to work effectively in this area.
  • We fund work that actively encourages young people to be involved in developing projects of value to them – right from the initial project design through to the final evaluation of the work carried out.
  • We fund work to ensure that young people with mental health problems from specific groups (such as rural communities, Black and ethnic minority groups, and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities) receive the targeted support they need.
  • We fund work which is examining and researching how information and new technology can be best used to support young people with mental health problems

Thanks for Where does the cash go?

Sixty percent of Red Nose Day money is spent in Africa and forty percent here in the UK.

A group of 20 experts carefully work out which projects should receive money.

Since Comic Relief started 20 years ago they have raised over £337 million and made over 7,000 grants. Over £169 million has gone to projects working with poor and disadvantaged people in Africa. In the UK, over £99 million has been given to projects working vulnerable and disadvantaged groups and communities.

Examples of projects:

UK :Bullying is a big problem for young people and can lead to huge amounts of distress and anxiety. The Merseyside Anti-Bullying Steering Group provides a telephone helpline and support for young people affected by bullying.

Africa:During the years of conflict in Sierra Leone, many young boys and girls were forced to join armies and were traumatised by their experiences. Comic Relief is helping to reunite some of them with their families and to give some, especially girls, an opportunity to go school and learn a trade.
