Story
Multiple sclerosis means “many scars”. These scars, known as lesions, occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves in the central nervous system — the brain and spinal cord. These attacks can happen at different times and affect different parts of the central nervous system, causing different symptoms depending on where the damage occurs.
My first known relapse happened in February this year. In my case, inflammation affected my spinal cord, causing weakness down my left side and extreme fatigue. I found simple, everyday tasks difficult or impossible to do.
I am now on treatment which, on average, can reduce relapses by around 50% and reduce the risk of disability getting worse.
I feel very lucky that I have recovered so well from my relapse, as this does not always happen.
While I am feeling amazing, thankful and grateful to have my body back, Niamh and I are taking on the challenge of (mostly) running 135k in October for the 135 people diagnosed with MS every week in the UK. We may add in a few walks and cycles!
Please give us a toot or a wave if you see us trying to bag our 135k!
