Sibs is the only UK charity representing the needs of siblings of disabled people. Siblings have a lifelong need for information. They often experience social and emotional isolation and have to cope with difficult situations in their families. Sibs provides support, training and information.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

This year I am walking my third ultramarathon, 50km in April, raising money for sibs. I have volunteered for the past 10 years for a sibs group in a local junior school, the only one in a school in Sussex. We have worked with over 60 children. We play games, do makes such as worry dolls and origami and it is a safe space for the children to share their thoughts and feelings. We are there to celebrate their highs and help with their lows. One celebration that sticks out particularly is when one of our children was so proud of her teenage brother being able to cut his fish fingers for the first time. This was something she felt comfortable to share with us.

We've been able to help with the lows, when a girl's sister, who has cerebral palsy, had a fall in the bathroom, she was naturally very worried. Within a few weeks of the incident, the sibs group leader had organised a basic first aid session for all the children, to alleviate their worries and give them skills for life.

We've had a lot of support and advice from sibs, they've provided activities for our children to do and now I'd like to give back.
