Over the last 4 years of my Biological Sciences degree, I have developed a strong interest in combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This led me to undertake a 9 month research project in an HIV lab for my final year. Dedicated scientists and doctors have managed to dramatically reduce the number of deaths from this terrible virus, however the education and awareness that is essential for HIV eradication is severely lacking in many areas that need it most.
This summer, I will be volunteering for 3 months in South Africa with Restless Development on an International Citizen Service (ICS) placement. ICS works alongside communities that have specifically requested their help. Restless Development aims to increase HIV/AIDS awareness, support sexual and reproductive health education and rights, tackle the issue of gender-based violence, and run skills and careers workshops for young people, amongst other aspects of their development programme.
ICS is funded by the government, and covers the costs of our travel, vaccines, accommodation, food etc. The first part of my placement is a challenge to raise £800 towards the work of Restless Development and their ICS partners. Any contribution from you will make a real difference to the lives of people in developing countries, so a huge thank you for your support!
