Story

‘A mother holds her child’s hand for a short while but their hearts forever’

Just over 9 months ago, my mum had no choice but to let go of my hand and begin her next journey.

Time and again, I was told to look for the blessing in things. To this, my thoughts would be ‘What blessing can there be in losing my mum, the one who loved me the most, the one who had a wish for me in her every breath? What blessing can there be in becoming an orphan?’

My mum’s time had come; though it’s something I struggle to accept, it’s a fact I can’t deny. Looking back at her death with this in mind, I do see the blessings. She was blessed to have her loved ones around her, she was blessed to have taken her final breaths at home, the place she had nurtured us with her love, rather than in a hospital or a hospice, an environment she wouldn’t have liked at all.

Amongst many other things, St. Luke’s hospice help make this possible for families. The journey of losing a loved one is a painful one, a pain you can’t describe, a pain you can only understand when you experience it and a pain you wish on no other. This is why I have chosen to take part in the St Luke’s Hospice 9 mile Midnight Walk. I am doing this in honour of my dearest Mum, for those daughters destined to be orphaned and for those families who will have their lives shattered at the hands of cancer. Having experienced this pain, I want to help add a little bit of ease in the lives of those that are yet to go through it until a miraculous cure is found for this disease. So please help me to help them by donating on my page.
