On Saturday 18th July 2020, I will be attempting to run a total of 30 miles (30 laps) around Millbrook lake and Millbrook Football Club, in less than 6 hours. Well, there's nothing else to do that day is there...
Initially I wanted to challenge myself to complete something that I've not done before during the lockdown and a marathon seemed like the obvious thing to do. However, with no official events taking place due to COVID19 it gave me the flexibility to make it that little bit tougher by increasing the distance to 30 miles and having a very mundane route which will undoubtably be a huge physical and mental challenge.
The idea to raise money for charity in the process was a no brainer, as was the idea for the charity to be local and to help children. I worry about the impact the lockdown and COVID 19 will have on young people and I foresee many charities being overwhelmed in a matter of months with those who have struggled to come to terms with this way of living. Although I hope I'm wrong, after speaking to the Dreadnought Centre they anticipate the same. The Dreadnought Centre also do fabulous work with autistic children through their ASPIRE programme and I am not ashamed to admit I have been completely inspired by the work of such organisations since watching the brilliant 'A Word' on TV over the last 4 years, particularly the young actor who plays Joe.
I understand there is a lot of charity events happening at this time, so I appreciate any donations you can make and if it's not for you that is absolutely fine. I also welcome anyone who wants to join me for any part of the run, big or small - with it being 30 x 1 mile laps of the lake this could be accessible to all sorts of runners.
Finally, as they said in the final episode of the A word - "I will aim to succeed but if I don't, I will fail in the most beautiful way"...probably by stumbling across the Dam with severe cramp and sunburn, nipples streaming with blood and ending up face down in the lake!
Thanks, Macca.
