Story

The Luton and Dunstable Hospital

Treating our patients in the best possible environment

Each year the Cancer Unit at the L&D Hospital treats hundreds of patients from across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

Thanks to the fantastic support from past patients and our local community we can buy extra equipment and comfort items for the Unit ensuring that all our patients are treated in the best possible ‘healing’ environment.

The unit has recently undergone a complete refurbishment including new flooring, a more comfortable waiting area, a better patient information service and better equipped chemotherapy cubicles with televisions and music systems to help distract and entertain patients while they are getting their treatment. The next stage is to purchase new chemotherapy chairs and an infrared vein finder so patients can feel more comfortable during their treatment.

Each chair costs around £1,000 but they are specially designed to be both comfortable and infection control friendly, they have arm support, are recline-able and are easy to get in and out of in order to make it more comfortable experience for our patients.

An Infrared Vein finder enables medical staff to detect veins in patients much quicker and easier. They cost £4,000 each but often with cancer patients, especially lung cancer patients, veins can collapse due to the chemotherapy treatment they receive. An Infrared Vein finder allows medical staff to raise a patient’s vein ensuring safe injection on the first attempt instead of having to repeatedly try and find a suitable place to inject for treatment. This will allow for a less distressing experience for all of our patients.

These items may seem relatively small but they make a big difference to patients and will help make their lives just that little bit easier at this difficult time.
