Story
Countdown: All 47 challenges completed, in just under 47 days!
But there's still time for you to make a donation and help UNICEF help children in the Philippines like Michel :)
Here's my story...
Hello. My name is Maddy and I am 10 years old.
In my blog at SquirrelOutside (where I post as Cyril (the Squirrel)) I frequently mention the wildlife I see on my trip to school and home again. Well imagine if suddenly, just like that, you had no school to walk to or no home to come back to. That is what has happened to over 5.5 million children in the Philippines when the biggest typhoon in history (named Haiyan) hit on 8 November 2013.
UNICEF is currently working in the Philippines, helping the millions of homeless or lost children find their families and keep warm, safe and dry with shelter and life-saving supplies of food, water and medicine. "Every disadvantaged child is our priority" says UNICEF, and they try to do "whatever it takes to make a lasting difference to a child's life".
Last summer, I ran a small stall at a fair and raised £14.11 for UNICEF. It's not much but:
£10 provides a safe water kit for a whole family
£4 feeds a malnourished child for nearly a week and
11p vaccinates one child from polio
so it could make a difference to someone in the world.
But I would like to raise more this time. £1,125 is enough for a temporary school or health centre for children who have survived a natural disaster, war or displacement. A safe space to learn and play or receive medical care.
My challenge:
1,125 is (almost) the number of hours in 47 days and by coincidence I found exactly 47 outdoor challenges in a book. I am going to try and complete them all in 47 days!!!! I have until 9pm on 30th January 2014. You can see what the activities are and follow my attempt on SquirrelOutside.
So, if following '47 Challenges - 47 Days' makes you feel a little happier or encourages you to go outdoors and feel healthier perhaps you would support my fundraising page or tell someone about it?
Your donation is sent directly to UNICEF, who believes every child has a right to grow up in safety and be happy and healthy too. UNICEF is not funded by the UN budget so it relies on public donations, from people like you and me.
Thank you,
Maddy aka Cyril (the Squirrel)
