THE MAGGIE MAY APPEAL

Thank you for visiting our page!!!

Staff, volunteers, and friends of Wood Green’s Heydon Centre are trying to raise £10k with which to purchase portable ultrasound equipment.  This essential diagnostic machine will allow early detection of cancer; heart, liver, and kidney disease; and the ability to find abnormalities in pregnant animals.  Currently, Heydon has no ultrasound facility and has to send all animals requiring such examination to its Godmanchester Centre, 25 miles away.  This journey can cause stress to sick animals and also means that the animals are taken out of a familiar environment, resulting in further distress.

The Heydon surgery does fantastic work and urgently needs to upgrade in-patient facilities and diagnostic equipment in order to continue to provide the best possible care. Ultrasound equipment is expensive and our target is an ambitious £10K. We will be raising the money under the umbrella name of The Maggie May Appeal which includes bag packing and collections at supermarkets; a grand auction to be held on 7 April, 2012, and also two Santa Runs, one to be held in Cambridge and the second to be held near the Heydon Shelter.

None of us are runners (indeed, getting out of bed is quite a challenge for some of us), and we are far from being fitness fanatics, but improving animal welfare and veterinary equipment available to the Heydon animals is a cause that we feel passionate about and is certainly worth dressing up in a long white beard and running/walking 5km for.  The Santa Runners (OK – most of us will walk!) are prepared to suffer blisters and the challenge of running in long white beards and red hats for Heydon and we promise to put up pictures after the event in return for donations!!!

The Appeal is named after two cats who would have benefited had Heydon owned such equipment.  Maggie was brought into Heydon in April this year with her new born kitten, May.  On examination, the vets noticed a bumpy mobile mass on Maggie.  She was sent up to Wood Green’s Godmanchester Centre.  Two calcified foetuses were found at the end of her right uterine horn – she had suffered an ectopic pregnancy. The foetuses were removed and she was routinely spayed. Happily, Maggie and May were both rehomed.

Wood Green Animal Shelters, http://www.woodgreen.org.uk/, rely on public donations (no Government or Lottery funds at all) and do a brilliant job often under difficult circumstances.

Last year, WGAS rehomed 5,500 animals.  Animals are often rescued in unpleasant and difficult circumstances. Several of us have adopted cats, dogs and guinea pigs from Heydon (and Wood Green at Godmanchester).
