I'm hoping to raise funds for the Cuimhne: Irish Memory Loss Project co-ordinated by the Federation of Irish Societies, recently renamed as Irish in Britain, in conjunction with The Irish Post.

The money raised will go directly to the recruitment, training and out of pocket expenses for an army of 50 recently retired professionals who will be our Cuimhne Champions across Britain, they will deliver training, raise awareness and support the development of Irish specific memory loss services and activities for our fellow Irish when memory loss features in their lives.  We also want to extend a hand of understanding and support to the many Irish family carers who look after their loved ones.

I was really impressed when I covered a story for the Irish Post about a reminiscence group for cared for clients with dementia, memory and cognitive issues in South London. The group was led by trained volunteers who treated clients and carers as unique individuals who had a host of interesting memories to share. This work was culturally sensitive which is so important to our Irish elders. It was a friendly and happy group with a lot of laughter and singing.

I am supporting this very worthy fundraising effort in memory of my Mum, Kit McNally, who passed away in May this year, having suffered from Alzheimer's.
