Story

Mallard Ward at Doncaster royal infirmary is a specialist unit, caring for individuals with dementia and delirium. Mallard promotes a none clinical setting to ensure a homely feel whilst in hospital. We try to encourage our patients to dress every morning in their day clothes and join us in our dayroom for a cup of tea and an chat or even join in with a group of different activities, which change on a daily basis. We a provide daily activities to promote cognitive stimulation and social inclusion. On the ward our team aim to provide high quality holistic care for our patients, addressing physical, emotional and mental health needs.Recently we've had more and more staff from other units around our hospital asking to come up and join us for a day to see what we do differently. One of the main differences is our dayroom , which unfortunately not all wards have available to them. Activities have become a big part of Mallard ward. To help stimulate patients an activity coordinator comes in on a daily basis with a collection of jigsaws, games, reminiscence activities, crafts, singing and lots more. Once others are aware of what is available to help stimulate patients, we are now finding staff coming to the ward to request to lend different items to help with patients on their own wards. It would be a fantastic idea if we on mallard ward could create a lending library, where staff from other wards can have access to some of the same things as ourselves. We hope to create boxes of different activities to help stimulate patients, instead of having nothing to do while sat by their bedsides.

In order to raise the funds to start the library we are planning a 5mile walk from mallard ward DRI to Benton house (one of the places patients go to after they visit us) ,to try and raise enough to money to get us up and running.
