Story

So where did it all begin......

Sarah, in our logistics department, decided a challenge would be a good idea. What could we do? Non of us were particularly athletic, some afraid of heights and the list could go on. So the final idea was the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. In itself it will be a challenge, from different abilities and fitness levels, to family commitments (some of the fur baby kind), when would we fit everything in.

Enough with the negatives. Lets think positive.....

As a team we wanted to use the opportunity to give an incentive (so we couldn't back out) and also raise awareness, plus a little bit of money for charity. But which one? ...... We then decided on Dementia UK. Here are some of the reason we chose this charity:

Amy: In January 2019 my Grandma passed away from vascular dementia. Suffering for many years it was devastating to watch someone you love not remember who you are. Over the years my Grandma changed and developed a sense of humour I didn't  know she had. From the little faces she pulled and the things she would say, never failed to put a smile on my face. I would love to say this is a one off in our family, but prior to my Grandma's passing her own mother dies of Alzheimer's in 2005.

These diseases can affect us all and in most cases the hardest impact can be on the families, as they watch their loved ones disappear. If what we are doing can help to raise awareness, most importantly the families then I am ready to take on the challenge.

Louise: Dementia UK is very close to my heart as Dementia has unfortunately affected a few of my closest relatives.

My Grandfather sadly passed away three years ago from Dementia, after suffering for the last few years of his life. My Grandmother has currently been in a nursing home for the last two years, as a result of the illness. It is heartbreaking to visit her now, remembering her as the full of energy, strong, high spirited women that she was and find that she does not recognise any one of us. To see her constantly scared, upset and confused is very difficult and upsetting. As people are increasingly living to an older age, it seems the Dementia is affecting more and more people and we need to do anything that we can to try and slow down its progress and research and develop ways to prevent or alleviate this illness.

Sarah: My Nanna was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in March 2019. From what was once a very outgoing and independent woman, it has been difficult to see her be completely over thrown by this horrible disease. It is also the emotional strain that is placed on the family and Dementia UK offer families the help and support they need to cope during a tough time.

Once it was decided we then roped in a couple of our engineers and a colleague from another company we work with to join us on the journey.

A daunting challenge, but one were a excited to achieve, but if we can help one person it would have all been worth it.
