Story

Thanks for supporting my fundraising.

I would have loved to host a traditional coffee morning event with sweet and savoury bakes but given the ever changing Government Guidelines regarding Covid, I knew it would be impractical. So, I am doing a 10k walk instead in my local area (from my property to Oxleas Meadows and back).

Most of you will know of the  journey that was bestowed upon me this year but for those of you who don’t, I would like to share with you the reasons why I am taking part in this challenge.

A day before lockdown, on 19th March 2020, I had an appointment at Macmillan Centre at Queen Elizabeth hospital where I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was shocked and devastated and my thoughts were overwhelmed with how my family, especially my two young children would cope without me and the longterm impact it would have on them should I not survive cancer.

At the time of diagnosis, sadly, but understandably, NHS were unable to offer me the life saving surgery I needed to beat cancer because of Covid-19, but I count my lucky stars that I had private health insurance at the time  and I was extremely fortunate to receive the vital treatment within one week of diagnosis and I live to tell the tale.

My road to recovery began at the end of March. This was certainly an uphill struggle especially during the height of lockdown and the need to self isolate post surgery. The most challenging and heartbreaking part of this journey was watching my son cry a day after my surgery and say “mummy I’m worried you will never get better”.

David, my bigger and stronger half, was amazing - he cared for me and our two children around the clock. He had three of us to dress, bathe and feed and head out to pick up essentials. It was tough on all of us.

Throughout my journey, which continues, Macmillan Cancer Support and the team of Breast Cancer Specialist nurses (with a special mention to Leanne Hesse)  have been incredibly invaluable to my welfare and in turn my family’s. From the moment I received my diagnosis to now, they have been here to help me every step of the way, providing physical, and emotional support, work and financial advice via telephone consultations, text messages, zoom calls and face to face appointments.

I have experienced the magical work they do to help people like me and I want others who desperately need support to be able to receive it. This is why I am taking up the challenge of 10k walk to raise as much money as I can so that Macmillan are able to reach those who are fighting for their lives during this pandemic and beyond.
