Manuela's VSO Skipping Challenge · 24 January 2008

VSO is an international development organisation that brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. Everyday, VSO volunteers are working to empower people living in some of the world’s most marginalised communities.

Thank you for visiting my page!

UPDATE:
I have now completed the skipping challenge!!  It took three hours and twenty minutes, and I am still stiff!  Thank you for all the sponsorship!  See the photos here

What's it all about?
I'm fundraising for VSO because I'm taking part in a VSO Global Xchange project in Egypt and Luton! My team, made up of 9 UK volunteers and 9 Egyptian volunteers, will be setting off for Asyut, Egypt on the 16th of March. We'll spend 3 months there, and then 3 months in Luton. Our theme is 'Youth Leadership and Social Inclusion', so we'll be doing placements based around that, and staying with host families.

What's the skipping challenge?
On the 22nd of February I'm going to be skipping around Cambridge...via ALL the colleges, graduate and undergraduate! Yes, I really do mean with a skipping rope, and I'm sure I'll attract lots of attention making a fool of myself!

There are 31 colleges in total, and I estimate the distance at about 8 miles of skipping...so I'll be training hard in the next few weeks. I'll be starting off at Girton in the North West and finishing at Homerton to the South East. Click here to see the map I've drawn out of my route - zoom in and out to see it properly! Click on each marker to see which college it is - the list in order is on the left.

Is the money to pay for my exchange?
In a sense, the money I raise will be making a contribution to the cost of my exchange. But on the other hand, it will be going into general VSO funds to allow other people to take part in similar programmes. I think it's great that VSO offers volunteers from all over the world the chance to come to the UK and see what kind of issues and problems exist here, as well as sending British people overseas. So...the more I raise, the better!

Thank you very much!
Manuela
