Story

Headphones & Handbags

In aide of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, which will run as a series of club events* to raise money toward the charity.

The idea has come about because of a number of things: me wanting to give to the community of women everywhere - this is a worthwhile charity that continues to do its best in saving lives, and on a personal level.  I, perhaps, like a number of you, your friends or family members have been greatly affected by cancer and what it does and can often bring with it - I know my friend Gillian - she was a good friend, and oh. so young.  She would have been proud to back and attend an event such as this had she made it through her battle - this first one is honour of her!

So, if I could ask you to be gracious by helping to push this event: on your Facebook pages, if you are a Blogger don't stop talking about it, or Tweeting and retweeting day and night, texting and generally spreading the word where ever you go.

Our launch event of Headphones & Handbags is on Thursday, 15th March 2012, and you are more than welcome to also show your support there as well as contributing right here.

Most of all, what ever amount you can spare will go a long way to helping someone else's life.

Nervous excitement came and went on March 15th as I soon had my project manager head on - decorations to deal with at the venue, raffle prizes to sort and even the odd hiccup with DJ's and a moment of panic but I need not have worried - thanks to Judy - door lady cum expert ballon blower up.

9:00pm our doors open - soon enough supporters turned up in steady no's.  We had a lovely eveing; great music from the turntable selectors - all women, not even a bit of feedback could prevent the enthusiasm of the audience appreciating the guest PA's: Miracle - that Reggae no. had everybody skanking on the one, and Shea Soul rocked and stirred them with her sing-along club classics.

Bellowing out numbers of winning tickets in between the music, well it had to be for the great raffle prizes at least - compilation CD's galore to bath smellies and chocolates too hard to not resist - prizes I'd be glad to have won myself... Next time I shall by the whole raffle book and indulge myself. Where did the time go, it was all over before I had time to say "c'mon and jump to the beat".  Thanks to everybody who turned out, our collective input raised a tidy amount of £430 through the door entry - thank you so much, you all are shining stars.  Watch out the photos will be up online soon...

So, I'm buzzing with more ideas and this mission continues now I have a swing in my step.  More surprises on the way came my way when I found out that my work colleagues in my absence (it's called annual leave from work) did their own fund raising effort the same day as our gig.  Collectively, they pulled in a mighty £105.00 in 24-hours with lots of pink fairy cakes and staff painting their nails, donning pink wigs and faux pas fashion statements were made with quirky pink items of clothing - every item fetching a £1 for the buckets.  Thanks for going that extra mile, you guys in Customer Services are ace!

And there you have it to date, the offline effort has greatly bumped up my total to a mighty 78% in this £1,0000 Challenge so not much to do now to bring in a home run of £115.00 to complete the first success of Headphones & Handbags efforts to make Breakthrough Breast Cancer proud - can we do this?  "Yes, we can" and I will!

Thank you everybody for making sacrificial giving with your generous gestures, you are indeed a blessing.  Your help will bring a smile to woman out there somewhere and help to save a life!  Let's keep it up!
