COAST TO COAST BIKE RIDE · 7 July 2018

We raise funds for all wards and departments at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, enhancing the experience of patients, their families and staff, over and above what NHS funding alone can deliver. Together we can make a real difference to local people when they need it most.

Story

On March 23rd 2018 I was awoken from my sleep by my wife who I thought was having a nightmare. It soon became evident that was not the case. 999 was dialled and what has ensued in the past 5 weeks has done nothing but highlight how remarkable our Local NHS Trust is.

To cut a long story short Alison was treated in our own home by a Community Defibrillator Operator, an Ambulance First Responder, and 2 Paramedics. Rushed to Huddersfield A&E intensive care unit, before she was transferred to Calderdale ICU, where she spent 14 hours sedated and under constant observation whilst I can't recollect how many tests were carried out.

Fortunately for us all Alison came round at the first attempt, a huge relief to our family. To get to the route of this episode Alison has undergone the following: a full body CT scan,  Brain MRI, Brain EEG, Heart ECG, Angiogram, Heart MRI, Heart CT scan and 9 days in Calderdale Cardio Unit.

The cause of the episode has been pinpointed to a Cardiac Arrest. Alison has now been fitted with an Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator, a life saving machine should the same happen again.

Through this very anxious time for Alison and those closest to her one thing has never been mentioned when all the procedures I have mentioned above have been carried out, that one thing is Money. That is because Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS  Foundation Trust Charitable Funds have invested all it has into state of the art machinery to aid patients and staff alike in providing first class health care when things like this happen.

I couldn't begin to imagine what the cost of Alison's care and tests would add up to. As to the value of her Defibrillator (priceless).

I have nothing but admiration for the  Doctors and nurses who have cared for her and supported my family through this time.

As I jump on my bike on the 7th July to complete the 135 mile ride from Morecambe to Scarborough I would like to try and raise money for a cause that has recently given me and my family much more than I could ever give back.

Thank you in advance for your donations and support.
