In October last year I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had surgery the following month. I am very thankful the cancer was found early and was treated quickly. There are 4 different types of thyroid cancer. I had papillary cancer which thankfully has a very good prognosis with a 90% cure rate. Before this happened I knew nothing about thyroid cancer and would not have thought about checking my neck or about how important my thyroid is and what it actually does! I have had half of mine removed now and will have check ups for the next few years.
Thyroid Cancer is rare, but numbers are rising. Currently, this stands at approximately 2,700 new cases in the UK each year. More prevalent in women than men (at a ratio of 2 to 1), Thyroid Cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy.
So CHECK YOUR NECK!
Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust is the first national charity in the UK dedicated solely to the support of patients with Thyroid Cancer.
