Losing My Locks for Lipoedema · 9 April 2019

Lipoedema UK is the UK's leading charity dedicated to supporting those affected by lipoedema. We raise awareness, advocate for early diagnosis and better treatment, and drive medical interest to inspire new research and improve outcomes for all living with this condition.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I want to raise money for Lipoedema UK by having my head shaved, on my birthday - 9 April 2019.

I have Lipoedema.  Lipoedema is a condition which makes you fat, but it is not obesity. The fat, which is different to 'normal' body fat, can accumulate in specific areas: buttocks; thighs; pads of fat around the knees;  lower legs, with braceleting at or above the ankles; arms, with braceleting at the wrists.

Lipoedema is 'heritable' which means it can be passed from parent to offspring.  It appears to affect far more women than men (approximately 11% of the female population).

In my experience most medical professionals, especially GPs, have never heard of Lipoedema, so often it takes years to get a diagnosis; I wasn't diagnosed until I was 45, even though I'd been symptomatic since age 5.
