My Story:

It was Easter weekend, 2021 and I just didn’t feel right, I had a fever and flu like symptoms, never did it cross my mind I would be diagnosed with heart failure at age 36.

An ambulance transported me from home to Broad Green Hospital, after an ECG didn’t look normal. The day after arriving, I suffered a cardiac arrest and had a further 2 that week.

On April 12th, I missed my daughters 10th birthday and was at my lowest ebb, I was transferred to Wythenshawe Heart & Lung hospital and was fitted with a BiVAD (a pump to assist the heart function when both right and left pumping chambers of the heart are failing).

I lay in bed for weeks, unable to move around but in hope that as specialists assessed my heart it would repair and get stronger. It was determined that it would not and that I would require a heart transplant in order  to survive.

I was put on the super urgent waiting list for a heart transplant and after just 10 days, I was given the most special gift, the gift of life. 

My body had been through a lot and recovery was going to take time after lying in bed for so long, my muscles had deteriorated & I was vulnerable and weak. I needed to learn to walk and swallow again.

From the moment I arrived at Wythenshawe to the day I left, I was in excellent care. They helped me through my time of need and they are all heroes. I admire the commitment they have to all the patients & families. There are not enough words to express my gratitude but  I hope in raising money for Newstart this will be a small way to show BIG appreciation!

The Manchester run will take place on a special date for me and I am very lucky to have some super, supportive, friends Helen, Holly and Vicky join me on this challenge. Whilst in hospital & unable to see the outside world, they kept me motivated and in touch with it, sending pictures & messages along the way.

We will also complete the Manchester 10k in memory of my donor and their family for their selflessness and for giving me the gift of life. I prayed that I could go home again and to be with my family…my daughters and my partner Lee and I am truly thankful for this, everyday.
