Catherine, Joe, Joseph, and Mary Oakley is raising money for Leeds Mind
In memory of Marie-Claire Oakley
Leeds Mind promotes positive mental health and wellbeing, and provides support and help to those who need it. 1 in 4 people experience mental health difficulties at some point in their lives. Leeds Mind are here for you if you are struggling with a negative mental health experience.

Story

Born in Leeds in 1989, Marie-Claire was a kind, creative and highly compassionate person who gave everything to the people around her. Those who knew her will be very familiar with her intelligent sense of humour, her warm personality, and her independent mind. Her laugh was infectious, and her caring character meant that she found friends wherever she went.

Marie-Claire experienced mental health difficulties periodically as an adult and she ultimately took her life, though she was not defined by these experiences. She always strove to help those in need, which has inspired us to fundraise in her name. We would like to emulate her generosity and raise awareness of the kinds of challenges she faced and which still face others like her.

Suicide is the most common cause of death for people aged between 20 and 35 in the United Kingdom, according to the Office for National Statistics, and 1 in 4 people will experience significant mental health issues at least once in their lives.

Leeds Mind is a charity that provides help and support to those facing mental illness living in the city, and to those who care about them. It also part-funds Leeds Suicide Bereavement Service (LSBS), which offers compassionate support to people bereaved by suicide and which is currently supporting Marie-Claire's close friends and family.

Let's work together to raise awareness of mental illness and suicide, and to move forward with open hearts and understanding minds.

Thank you.

Catherine (Marie-Claire's sister), Joe (Marie-Claire's brother), Joseph and Mary (Marie-Claire's mum and dad)
