My father was a refugee who left Prague a week after Czechoslovakia was annexed by the Nazis. He never talked about the deeply traumatic effects of his family's experience.
Perhaps this influenced me when I joined Amnesty International when I was a teenager, and worked briefly with the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture.
In my job, I meet people who have escaped physically from traumatic experiences of war and persecution but remain psychologically stranded in painful memories of their experiences.
I'm very happy to support Tfsw to provide psychotherapy and counselling to refugees and asylum seekers, helping free them to live life to the full.
Whether I can actually successfully learn and recite a poem is another matter entirely...
