Kath Brett is a founder member of Langstone Pilot Gig Club and was  instrumental in establishing the Jurassic League, the country’s first competitive Regional rowing league in Cornish Pilot Gig rowing with a membership of 10 clubs. In January of this year, after extensive tests, Kath was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Close friend Mark Brownjohn has volunteered to raise an awareness of the disease and raise much needed funds to aid research.

The sport of Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing entered Mark’s life in his 50’s having been introduced to the sport through a ‘Taster’ training session at Langstone Pilot Gig Club based in Hayling Island, Hampshire.

Mark has subsequently acquired an appetite for long distance rowing challenges.

In December 2016 Mark skippered a crew of four rowers and rowed the Atlantic Ocean by entering the Talisker Atlantic Challenge, successfully rowing the 3500 miles from the Canary Islands to celebrate his 60th birthday two days after arriving at Antigua in the West Indies.

Marks latest challenge is to raise funds towards finding a cure for MND and seeks donations by participating in “The Lionheart Great British Row Round Britain”. The event will commence on Sunday 13^th June from Burnham on Crouch, Essex.

Mark will row the entire route in “ROXY” an eight oared purpose built 11.8 metre offshore Atlantic Rowing boat with eight berths and capable of carrying a crew of twelve.

The Round Britain row will involve 6 legs, the first being from Essex to Cornwall, then on to Northern Ireland, up to Sky and around Scotland, next to Fraserburgh, on to County Durham and finally back to Burnham.

When at sea all the rowers will rotate day and night and row shifts of 2 hours on and 2 hours off. The total distance will be approximately 1650 nautical miles and is expected to take 6 weeks.

Your generous donations will assist in finding a cure for Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a life changing disease which can effect people of all ages and most of those unfortunate enough to be diagnosed by MND have only a short life expectancy.

There is a 1 in 300 risk of getting MND across a lifetime. It can affect adults of any age, but is more likely to affect people over 50.

Motor neurone disease kills a third of people within a year and more than half within two years of diagnosis.
