Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
From 18 to 25 August I am going to be cycling the Haute Route Pyrenees along with about 500 other riders from 40 countries. It has been described as “the highest and toughest amateur cyclo-sportive in the world” and although I cycle regularly, it will be a huge challenge for me and will be the hardest event physically and mentally that I have done.
While I hope to enjoy the experience (some parts probably only in retrospect) I will also be motivated to complete the challenge by being part of a small team of riders raising money for the event’s official charity, the Type 1 Foundation, which aims to improve Type 1 diabetes treatment and education, including for children in Rwanda. They provide access to much-needed supplies (i.e., glucose monitoring devices, test strips, insulin injection devices, etc.), diabetes medications to individuals with diabetes - and education for health care professionals.
The route covers 770 kms in the central part of the French Pyrenees. Over the seven mountain stages I will be climbing 20,000m, over twice the height of Everest, crossing many of the mountain passes that the Tour de France has just used (although a lot more slowly than the professionals!).
If you feel like making a donation to the Type 1 Foundation, it would definitely be going to a good cause and will help spur me to pedal over the Pyrenean mountain passes in a few week’s time.
Thank you
Mark
