My young friend Matt was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma bone cancer in 2011 when he was only 8 years old and the tough decision to have his leg amputated was taken shortly before his 9th birthday in order to save his life. He kept us mesmerised to see his resilience, determination and love for life as he strove to live to the max through all manner of activities including golf, cricket, swimming, wheelchair basketball and his immense infatuation with football and his beloved Bristol City FC. In Dec 2013 the devastating news was received that the cancer had returned and Matt went through a torrid time with numerous chemo treatments.
Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity learnt of Matt’s condition when the cancer returned for a 3rd time in Aug 2014, and at short notice were able to gift Matt and his dad Colin, with Matt’s wish of visiting Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium. There they got to meet some of the players, and have refreshments in a hospitality box followed by a match that they were able to enjoy.
Rays of Sunshine were able to grant Matt an unforgettable experience, and one that Colin recalls, was a hugely uplifting experience for Matt during a very difficult time for him and his family. Regrettably Matt passed away in Dec 2014 at the age of 11, however they were an amazing 11 years where Matt was everyone's friend and an inspiration to so many of us fortunate enough to have met him. He is sorely missed and lovingly remembered.
