Story
Earlier this year my close friend Paul died of cancer. My children suggested that we did something together to raise money for one of Paul's charities.
I met Paul when I was 12. We both enjoyed "Swallows and Amazons" and we mucked about in ponds and rivers a lot. At 18 we rode around Wales for charity. We studied medicine together, traveled to Southern Africa on an elective together and shared a house. Paul was best man at my wedding. Paul was simply one of the best men that I have ever met. A great family man, a dedicated GP and kind to everyone; stranger or friend. He wanted more time but was not bitter about dying. He lived every minute he had been given, felt blessed and he continued to enrich those around him to the last.
My children think I am a good swimmer, because when they were ten I could beat them over 25 metres. I have not swum seriously for years. In truth, I swim like a stone. The suggestion that we enter the Great North Swim in Windermere was a mugging, co-organised by my four scheming daughters. Emma and Matty are joining in. The three of us are now in serious training.
Training has been a shock, not least the cold water at outside swimming venues.
If you cannot give a donation, your moral support and prayers are also most welcome. Please pray for Paul.
Eternal rest, grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
