The vast majority of children in orphanages aren’t orphans at all: 80% of the 8 million children confined to orphanages have at least one living parent or close relative who could care for them. With the right support and for children without family, there is always a better option than an orphanage.

To put it simply, orphanages don’t protect children, they harm them.

Hope and Homes for Children works across the world to keep families together, reunite families, and build new families, so every child can grow up in the care and support of a loving family.

For many families that we support, Coronavirus isn’t just a pandemic, but a social care crisis. It will come as no surprise that, in all kinds of crises, the worst hit are families that are fragile economically, physically and emotionally, and so more than ever vulnerable families need all the support that we can provide to prevent the irreversible damage of their child being removed to an orphanage. Similarly, for children who are currently confined to orphanages, the risk of abuse, neglect and illness is significantly increased due to insufficient hygiene measures, reduced staff capacity and the number of children living so closely together.

Your support has never been more vital as our teams on the ground rapidly adapt and innovate to create new ways of ensuring that these children and their families are not forgotten during the global pandemic and beyond.
