Peak District Mighty Hike 2023 - full marathon · 22 July 2023 ·
Thanks for supporting our fundraising. Our "team" is father and son Mark & Jamie Sims. Although a 26 mile marathon walk will be a slog we have both walked/run marathons before , and would hope to complete it within about 10-12 hours. My legs aren't getting any younger mind.
The first time I did a walking marathon ( The White Peak Walk ) it was in 30 degree heat and I ended up with blisters so bad I had to wear flip flops to work for a week afterwards . I have learned that lesson and will be taking changes of socks and some talc this time.
We have lost family and 2 close friends to cancer too young ,
so this may be quite a challenge but we 're up for it to enjoy the day and bring in as much as we can for Macmillan to help with their fantastic work.
Macmillan gives people with cancer everything they’ve got. If you’re diagnosed, your worries are Macmillan’s worries. Macmillan’s doing whatever it takes. But without your help, Macmillan can’t support everyone who needs them. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and secure. Your details are safe, JustGiving - they'll never sell them or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs.
Been on our first training together on Sunday 5th Feb- 8 mile run out to the Goyt valley from Stockport- Jamie a lot quicker than me - pleased we're walking the marathon, not running . Also walked 6 miles along the River Mersey from Stockport yesterday - must try to get as many miles into these old legs over the next few months.
26.2.23: update -been out running average 8-10 miles each Sunday. Having to stay local because I check the cattle in Allestree Park every Sunday morning. They are there as part of a conservation grazing programme. Jealous of Jamie who has been up Kinder Scout and Moel Siabod in the last couple of weeks. The cattle go soon so it will be good to get further afield then, and maybe even up a mountain.
23.4.23: managed to get out on my first longish training walks. Did a 19 miler to Alport Heights and back , see photo, and then another 10 miler last weekend - both from the front door. Need to get some more over the next few weeks.
30.4.23: Jamie home for long weekend so did a 15 mile tour of our 3 local valleys : Bottle Brook , the Derwent , and the Ecclesbourne , with a nice stop half way round at The Hollybush in Makeney , one of our favourite pubs. Legs a bit stiff tonight.
20.7.23: 2 days to go and the weather forecast looks bad - heavy rain all day. Been doing 10 mile walks/runs every weekend-hope that’s enough. Had foot problems and doing daily Physio exercises-hoping that’s enough to get me round , and desperately hoping for no blisters as that would be a real killer.
