Brighton Marathon 2012 · 15 April 2012 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page in memory of my Grandmother, Vivienne Athey...

2012 marks the ten year anniversary of my Grandmother's death.

Vivienne suffered from Alzheimer's Disease for a number of years, and although it wasn't the disease that took her life physically, it stole her mentally long before she passed away.

The impact that suffering from Alzheimer' Disease had on her quality of life and on the quality of life of those around her who cared for and supported her during these years was saddening and stressful. Occasionally there were moments of humour, however, they really only masked the sad truth.

Grannie suffered from Alzheimer's for a relatively short period of time compared to some sufferers; 6 years, however, this in no way diminishes the impact that it had on my family.

Alzheimer's Disease is becoming an increasingly common disease. I'm sure that almost all who read this will know someone who has suffered or is suffering. The work that the Alzheimer's Society does for sufferers and families is immense and can not be underestimated. Their work doesn't stop there though; the research they do into the Disease and how to hopefully combat it is immeasurable too. For this I am truly grateful.

If you feel you'd like to support me in my challenge to run the Brighton Marathon please dig as deep as you can... As you all know, I'm built for comfort not speed and certainly not distance! This is by far the most challenging event I've ever done, however, it pales into insignificance when compared to what sufferers and supporters of those with Alzheimer's Disease have to go through. It's going to be a fun day (for supporters at least) and if you'd like to be part of it then get your cards out and start donating...!

Thanks for your time in reading this and for your support.

Mark.
