Gobi March · 23 March 2005

Basic services in Myanmar/Burma collapsed following a coup in 2021. As the violence worsens, the suffering could last for decades. Prospect Burma tackles the long term crisis. We get young people into higher education abroad, to gain skills to build a safe, inclusive future for the country's people.

Story

Dear All

As many of you know, I am competing in the Gobi March in late April.

This is a 7 day, 250km international ultramarathon. The course descends from cold high valleys nestled deep between glaciated peaks deep in the Tian Shan Mountains at over 2,000 meters altitude to 150 meters below sea level, traversing the historic Flaming Mountains and into the desolate Turpan Basin, the hottest place in China and one of the lowest places on earth. Temperatures have been recorded as high as 50 degrees Centigrade.

I will be carrying everything I need for 7 days, besides water.

You can follow the race at: www.racingtheplanet.com As some of you may also know, I am also one quarter Burmese and will hence be raising money for Prospect Burma, a non-political educational charity dedicated to supporting the education of exiled Burmese students and provide vocational training schools for refugees on the Thai/Burma border. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Prospect Burma will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. So please sponsor me now! Many thanks for your support. Mark.
