Event: Nepal Impact Marathon 2019, from 11 November 2019 to 17 November 2019
The IMS Foundation takes the biggest challenges facing Nepal & seeks out the most extraordinary grassroot organisations who are working to catalyse real change in the country.

Story

I like to run, but before 2018 I had never considered myself a runner. I ran for fitness. I ran to clear my head and focus my thoughts. I ran to help train for other sports. Then I joined a running club. In 2019, I’m taking it a step further, and I’ll be running my first marathon – in Nepal! I decided to take on this challenge to combine a few of the things I love doing most: traveling, making a positive impact on the world, and of course, running.

The Himalayas have always been fascinating to me. The highest mountain range in the world, and home to the highest mountain – Everest. Just being in its presence will be an adventure. That’s what I’ve found with traveling – the more you see, the more you want to see, and the adventure is a thrill that’s hard to beat. Nepal is going to be my big trip of 2019, and I can’t wait.

That brings me to impact. My work in global health is something I’m incredibly proud of, whether it’s the end-of-life care work or maternal and newborn health reports I wrote from a few years ago, or the more recent report on global access to eye health. I hope these projects have made an impact somewhere in the world, and the Impact Marathon in Nepal has a similar goal. The money I’ll be raising helps support the United Nations Global Goals, also known as the Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, the Nepal Impact Marathon helps alleviate some of the biggest challenges Nepal is facing by supporting grassroots organisations working in the local community. Childreach Nepal has been around since 2009 and aims to improve children’s access to healthcare, education and child protection by creating schools that act as centres for children and community development. Similarly, Burns Violence Survivors – Nepal has worked on prevention, protection, advocacy, curative and long-term recovery and rehabilitation of burns survivors since 2008 in a country with 56,000 burns cases a year and only one dedicated hospital ward. These two organisations are catalysing change in Nepal at a local level that aim to make the world a better place by 2030. You can read more about them here:

Finally, that brings me to running. A marathon is certainly no small feat. A trail marathon at altitude is even more daunting! But I’m excited about the challenge, so check my page often for updates on my training as we inch closer to November 2019!
