We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

Story

Martez was born into a loving family. She had shown no signs of illness or distress untill Monday15th July. We spent a week going backwards and forwards between the Dr and the local childrens hospital. No one would believe us that she was very ill. They put it down to a tummy cold. Finally on the Friday, they believed myself and my husband, as she was no longer able to keep anything down and had not had a wet/dirty nappy since the Tuesday. On admittance to the local childrens hospital, they discovered that her tummy looked like it had an ostrich egg inside. Things became quite horrific for the next few days. Martez endured investagive surgery almost every day untill they decided that things were not right. They thought that she had been assaulted and bought in social services. However. The following day, they did another op and found that she had an huge mass in her uterus that had bloked the uritha and split the lining of the bowl. They appologised about the situation and made arrangements for her to be transfered to GOSH. Once there, she was in the best of hands. She had various tests to find out the type of cancer that she had. It turned out to be a very common childhood cancer, which normally shows itself on the arm, leg or torso. Never internaly and never before known to be found in the uterus.

Eventualy she had her 1st dose of chemo. She didn't react too badly and was allowed to be transfered back to our local childrens hospital, which was at the end of the road and enabled someone to be there 24/7.

Our wedding day was fast appoaching and there was good hope that Martez would be fit enough  to be our bridesmaid. On Friday the 18th August, it was decided that she would not be able to attend. I decided that I would spend the night with her and made arrangements to be collected from the hospital. I had all my things with me ready for the big day. The staff kept telling me to go home and that she would be fine with them. But I am a mother and there is nothing stronger than a mothers intuition. Martez needed me there with her that night.

In the early hours of the morning, I noticed that her breathing was not right. I called the nurse in to her little room and from that moment on, I knew our little girl was to become a real angel. I phoned her daddy and dispite the help that was given, Martez passed away in her daddies arms.

We were distraught and lost, but we also had 4 young children at home too. It was agreed to cancel our wedding, there seemed no point now, as one reason for marrying was so that she had a proper mummy and daddy. With strong advise from the medical team to continue with our plans. we were married...exactly 4 weeks from the day that Martez started to show that she was unwell. We took 10 years before we celebrated our wedding anniversary as to us it is Martez's day.

She was the most loving little girl and always happy. Even when she was going through hell she still smiled for us and did her froggy impression. She would be 20 this year. Her memory is with us every day and her name lives on in her nieces.

My husband and myself with the help of a few new but good friends,  have started an internet radio station and thought, what better way can there be, than to use this media to promote the wonderfull things that Great Ormond Street Hospital do. They cannot do it though without our help.
