Story
Having already done the London Marathon three times, it's time now for a new challenge and a new opportunity to physically torture myself in the name of charity. On Sunday 8 September, I shall be taking part in the Tri For Life triathlon, where I will be swimming, cycling and running to raise as much money as possible for Whizz-Kidz.
It is impossible to overstate the sterling work that Whizz-Kidz does. They ensure that every disabled child is able to lead a more independent life by providing them with wheelchairs and other vital equipment that they need to be able to have an active childhood at home, at school and at play.
I know what you're thinking. "You've done marathons before, the running part'll be a doddle." Think again. After having swum and then cycled, I will be in pure agony by the time I get round to the running stage. It's worth noting that I didn't learn to swim until I was 9 and before I began my training, the last time I had ridden a bike that actually moved was about 15 years ago. So my cycling technique will have all the grace and elegance of a cow on ice and my swimming performance will be about as slow, hapless and lacking in finesse as that Eric the Eel bloke from Equatorial Guinea in the Olympics a few years back. But hey, everybody likes a sporting underdog. However, I fear the toughest challenge will be attempting to get in and out of my wetsuit.
So make the pain and humiliation worth it and if you can, please make a donation towards this very worthy cause. Anything that you can give will be very much appreciated and gratefully accepted.
