We offer expert care, guidance and support to people living with a terminal illness

Story

At the age of 13 I was diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy.

A condition characterized by muscle weakness and wasting which affects muscles throughout the body but mostly affecting Facio (Face), Scapulo (Shoulders) and Humeral (Arm). Over time your muscles in your lower limbs can also be affected.

The genetic condition can affect everyone differently. Some people go through life barely noticing that there is anything wrong and others are wheelchair bound and struggle using their arms.

At the age of 13, in an adult hospital, this was a daunting and terrifying experience.

However, as I was assimilating this information the London Marathon was on.

I promised myself that day that this condition wouldn't affect me or hold me back and I would one day take part in the marathon.

25 years later and I am in a wheelchair, struggle using my arms and lifting even a cup of drink to my mouth and generally struggle with different muscles over my body.

I was lucky in 2018 to watch a good friend of mine, Nat take part in the London Marathon. I might not be able to run it but at least I could support her.

After she had done so well I told her my story. She then asked if I could fulfil my dream of taking part in one if she pushed me in a wheelchair.

Who was I to say no!

Nat and I will be taking part in the Brighton Marathon on September 2021

We are taking part in support of Marie Curie. A charity who helps support people with their end of life and terminal illness. Knowing that Marie Curie will be there to support not only individuals but families through a difficult time.
