Each week at least twelve young people in the UK die suddenly as a result of undiagnosed heart conditions. At Cardiac Risk In the Young we aim to save young lives & to help those affected by young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). We do this by providing support, information & screening those affected.

Story

Please help support me and a few select friends as we cycle over 260km/160miles over three days in July 2022 along the D-Day landing beaches for the wonderful charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). That’s almost the equivalent of doing the famous London to Brighton bike ride for 3 days in a row!

Why CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young)?

As most of you are aware we lost my brother Martyn to an undiagnosed heart problem in July 2019. This was obviously a very difficult time for our whole family and we were supported by so many people and organisations. However, one of the main charities we turned to was CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). They were fantastic in supporting and helping guide us through the turmoil our lives had become, including support with cardiac testing to help prevent the same issue in anyone else in the family. Therefore, I have decided to raise some funds for this wonderful charity and help their continuing work in preventing young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, as well as supporting affected families like ours.

Why Cycling in France?

Most of you will know that I am basketball mad and playing or training for Basketball is the only exercise I have done in the last 15years. I don’t do long distances, I avoid outdoor sports, I dislike wind and don’t even get me started on hills, however, the one thing Martyn and I had ever discussed that would be suitable for fundraising was a bike ride in France, so that is what I decided to organise.

Who, When and Where are we going?

Knowing how much this means to me I will be joined on my trip by Lewis Alston, Chris Beach and Rob Lowe (they will also be on their bikes) with the possibility of more to confirm. Originally planned for 2021 Covid restrictions have meant a delay to the trip and we will be taking an overnight ferry on Wednesday 27th July 2022 in order to cycle over the Thursday, Friday and Saturday before taking the overnight ferry at 10pm on the Saturday night. A short breakdown of our trip will be cycling to Utah beach on day one (over 50 miles), Omaha beach on day 2 (over 60 miles) and riding along Gold, Juno and Sword beaches finishing at Pegasus bridge (over 40 miles)

So please, if you can, donate to this wonderful cause and help me raise funds so CRY can continue their amazing work.
