Story
As a part of my study abroad program, I am interning at the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). Before landing in London, I had no idea that I would be placed with the UK’s leading sight loss charity; nor did I realize how much sight loss can affect one’s life until it hit close to home. On the day that I flew out of the US, my dad underwent surgery for a retinal detachment. This is a painless but serious eye condition that, if left untreated, can result in permanent sight loss. In the process of recovery, he has shared with me the struggle of dealing with this sudden change to his daily life. Every day 250 people in the UK start losing their sight to similar or more severe circumstances. RNIB, apart from offering practical and emotional support to blind and partially sighted people, campaigns for a society that is more accessible for all. In honor of my dad and the amazing team that I work with, I am participating in Skydive for RNIB 2023. That’s right! I’m jumping out of a plane… and attempting to raise £475… in a week! Every pound you donate will help create a future where sight loss is no longer a barrier.
